Conscious Travel in Abruzzo:

Because How You Travel Matters as Much as Where

We're locals who left Abruzzo for twelve years and came back to do tourism differently: direct relationships with the villages we work in, not a platform standing between you and them. Every trip we build starts with one question: does this place benefit from your visit, not just you?

NOT ANOTHER GETAWAY

You Need Somewhere Real.

Most travel doesn't fix what it's supposed to fix. You leave the city tired, book something that photographs well, follow an itinerary built for volume, and come home needing a holiday from your holiday. Somewhere along the way, "escape" started meaning louder, faster, more crowded, a different noise instead of no noise at all.

Conscious travellers notice this before anyone points it out. They're not looking for another checklist of sights. They're looking for a place where the pace changes because the place demands it, not because an app tells them to slow down.

OUR RESPONSE

Conscious Travel, as We Practice It

Abruzzo gave us that pace before we had a word for it. Coming back after twelve years abroad, we built borGO around a simple idea: travel should leave the places we visit better off, not just quieter for having survived us. Here's what that means in practice.

Not just a Platform.

Not just a Middleman.

We map our own territory: trails, farms, artisans, families, forgotten village traditions and turn what we find into experiences you can actually book. Some of what we offer doesn't exist on any other website, because we're the ones who built the relationship that makes it possible.

We're currently building two new experiences from scratch in Villamagna and Castel di Ieri, and we're doing it the way we do everything: by asking the people who live there which parts of their community they actually want to show visitors. Not what we think looks good. What they're proud of.

Where the Difference Actually Goes: the Village Fund

We're early with this, and we'd rather be honest about that than oversell it: 3% of what you spend on a borGO experience goes into a fund for the villages we work with. It's small right now, because we're small right now. It will grow as we do, and we'll always be specific about where it goes rather than making vague claims about "giving back."

We think that honesty matters more than the number itself, especially to travellers who've learned to be sceptical of sustainability claims that don't hold up to a second question.

A Pace You Set, Not One a Schedule Sets for You

No bus timetables, no fixed stops every forty minutes, no experience designed to be photographed rather than lived.

Whether it's one day or a full week, we build the itinerary around your pace, slower where you want to linger, more open where you want to wander. That's not a marketing line; it's how tailor-made planning actually works when there's no fixed product to sell you.

Our already-made packages? They all include a call with us so that we can make it fit you.

Plan Ahead, at Your Own Speed

If you'd rather research before you talk to anyone, our Abruzzo Travel Guide is built for exactly that — villages, valleys, seasons, and practical logistics, written by people who live here, not summarised from someone else's guidebook.

Abruzzo Was Built for This Kind of Travel

Over a third of Abruzzo is protected as a national park — more than any other Italian region. That's not a marketing statistic; it's the reason the villages, the food traditions, and the pace of life here are still intact rather than replaced by tourism infrastructure. Conscious travel isn't a niche approach we're layering on top of Abruzzo. It's closer to the region's default setting than an exception to it.

Questions About Conscious Travel with borGO

  • Is conscious travel with borGO more expensive than a normal tour?

Not necessarily. What changes is where the money goes — toward local guides, family-run accommodation, and the village fund, instead of platform fees and intermediaries. It also changes how much time we spend before quoting anything: listening to the pace and budget you actually want, not fitting you into a fixed package. Ask us for a quote and compare it for yourself.

  • Do you only work with small groups?

Yes, by design. Our experiences are built for individuals, couples, families, and small groups (max 15), not coach tours. Small numbers are part of what keeps the relationship with each village and provider genuine.

  • How do you decide which villages and experiences to work with?

Both start with listening. When we launched, local providers — guides, artisans, small producers — came to us and we simply helped them get visibility. For a complete destination, we go further and ask directly: right now in Villamagna and Castel di Ieri, we're building experiences with residents, letting them choose which parts of their community and traditions they want to share with visitors.

  • Where does the village fund actually go?

3% of what you spend on a borGO experience goes into a fund for the villages we work with. We're early stage and the fund is still small — we'll always be specific and transparent about where it's spent as it grows, rather than making broad claims.

  • Can I combine this with a tailor-made itinerary or a package?

Yes. Everything on this page reflects how we build every borGO trip, whether it's a single experience, a tailor-made itinerary, or one of our ready-made packages.
