About borGO: Slow Travel Rooted in Abruzzo’s Villages
borGO is your gateway to a different kind of travel in Italy — where slow tourism, local experiences, and sustainable adventures come together in the heart of Abruzzo’s hidden villages. We're building a network of local farmers, artists, guides, and dreamers to create high-quality travel experiences that celebrate nature, tradition, and real human connection.
Ready to Experience Abruzzo Differently?
Abruzzo is not a destination to rush. It is a region to explore slowly — through villages, landscapes, and real encounters with the people who live here.
Whether you are planning a short escape or a longer journey, we are here to help you design a meaningful travel experience rooted in authenticity.
Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
What is slow travel, and why is borGO different from a regular tour operator?
Slow travel means choosing depth over distance, spending more time in fewer places, connecting with the people who actually live there, and leaving with something more than photos.
borGO isn't just a booking platform or a bus-tour company. We design every experience together with local farmers, artisans, and guides in Abruzzo's villages, so what you live is genuinely theirs to share — not a performance built for tourists.
How does my booking support local villages in Abruzzo?
Most tour operators take a cut and move on. We decided from day one that wasn't enough. Every borGO experience is owned and led by someone from the local community. Your money contributes directly to them and the community via projects we coordinate or support. We reinvest part of our revenue in village conservation too, because a company that profits from a place owes something back to it.
Do I need to speak Italian to enjoy a borGO experience?
Not at all. borGO was built with international travellers in mind from day one: our founder's own experience living and working abroad shaped a deep understanding of what it means to arrive somewhere new and want a genuine connection, not just a guided tour. It also happens that Abruzzo is dramatically under-served for English-speaking visitors: most local operators don't cater to international guests, which is exactly the gap we set out to fill.
All our experiences are available in English, and our guides are selected for their ability to share their world across languages*. Some of the best moments — a shared meal, a walk through olive groves, learning to make pasta — need very few words anyway.
* when not possible we try our best to find people with language skills.
When is the best time to visit Abruzzo?
Abruzzo rewards you in every season, but the sweet spots are late spring (May–June), wildflowers, mild temperatures, uncrowded trails, and autumn (September–October), harvest season, wine festivals, and golden light in the villages. Summer is beautiful on the Trabocchi Coast; winter brings silence, snow on Gran Sasso, and some of the most atmospheric village life you'll find anywhere in Italy. There's no wrong answer, only what you're looking for.
