Perched on a dramatic rocky spur above the Sangro valley, Roccascalegna is one of Abruzzo's most striking medieval villages. Its castle — built into the living rock — has watched over the surrounding landscape since the Lombard era, passing through the hands of various dynasties and accumulating centuries of history within its walls.
A guided visit takes you through the castle's rooms and towers, bringing context to what you see: the architecture, the strategic position, the stories embedded in the stonework. From the top, the views over the Majella massif and the valley below are genuinely worth the climb.
After the visit, lunch is at Civico 20, a restaurant right in the village of Roccascalegna, where the menu draws on the honest, ingredient-led cooking of inland Abruzzo.
The full experience runs around four hours, making it a well-paced half-day that combines cultural depth with a proper sit-down meal.
