Castel di Ieri is not a name you will find on most travel itineraries, and that is precisely the point. Tucked into the Abruzzo landscape along the ancient Tratturo Celano-Foggia, this small fortified village holds layers of history that go back well beyond the Middle Ages, guided by people who actually live here.

The tour opens at the Italic Temple, one of the best-preserved examples of Italic temple architecture in Europe. This is not a reconstruction or a ruin pieced together by historians. The structure stands as it has for centuries, a rare and largely overlooked landmark that puts Castel di Ieri in a category of its own.

From there, the route leads into the surrounding woodland to the Hermitage of the Madonna di Pietrabona, a semi-cave complex set within an oak forest known locally as the Sacred Wood. The site layers pagan and Christian history in a way that feels organic rather than curated. It sits on a rocky terrace above the ancient drover's road, and the views alone are worth the walk.

Back in the village, the tour moves through the historic centre on foot. Narrow streets including the old Via degli Ebrei lead past consecrated and deconsecrated churches, noble palaces, and the old communal oven. The final stop is the Norman Tower, dating to the 13th century, where Templar symbols are carved into the interior walls. Climbing to the top gives you a full panoramic view over the valley and the megalithic walls on Monte Urano, built around 700 BC.

This is a guided tour led by locals, not a scripted walk through a site you could cover with a brochure.
