Nestled between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains, Abruzzo is one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. Whether you’re planning to explore medieval villages, hike in national parks, or enjoy the coastline, getting to Abruzzo is easier than you think. Here's a complete guide on how to reach Abruzzo by train, plane, or car — sustainably and comfortably.

Getting to Abruzzo by Train

At borGO, we encourage train travel as a sustainable way to explore the beauty of Abruzzo. Fortunately, the region is well connected by Italy’s rail network.

Adriatic Railway (Frecciarossa High-Speed Trains)

One of the main railway routes is the Adriatic Line, running along Italy’s east coast. You can take high-speed Frecciarossa trains directly to Pescara, Abruzzo’s coastal hub, from Milan, Bologna, Lecce, Bari.

These trains offer a fast and comfortable experience with modern amenities such as air conditioning, power outlets, and free Wi-Fi.

Search tip for travelers: Use the official Trenitalia website or app to book direct trains to Pescara Centrale.

From Rome: The Scenic Route

If you’re coming from Rome, you can take a regional train through one of the most picturesque railway routes in Italy. The line from Roma Tiburtina to Sulmona, Avezzano or Pescara winds through mountain valleys, national parks, and ancient villages. It may be slower, but the views are unforgettable — a hidden gem for slow travel lovers.

This route includes the legendary "Trans-Siberian Railway of Italy", especially stunning during autumn and winter.

Flying to Abruzzo

Flying is also a convenient way to reach the region, especially for international visitors.

Pescara International Airport (Aeroporto d’Abruzzo)

This is the only airport located in Abruzzo, just a few minutes from the center of Pescara. It offers regular flights from several European cities including:

  • London

  • Brussels

  • Frankfurt

  • Milan

  • Valencia

From the airport, you can reach Pescara city center by bus or taxi, and continue your journey by train or rental car.

Rome Airports: Fiumicino (FCO) & Ciampino (CIA)

For more flight options, especially long-haul international flights, Rome’s airports are just a 2-hour drive from Abruzzo. You can travel to the region via:

  • Car (via A24 motorway)

  • Bus shuttle services

  • Direct trains from Rome to L’Aquila, Sulmona, or Pescara

Pro tip: Book a direct bus to your destination in Abruzzo from the airport to save time and transfers.
